Effective communication all begins with initiative. If YOU don’t make an effort to communicate, nothing good happens.
A 15-year-old girl dying of brain cancer gave me one of the greatest life lessons I’ve ever been taught. Vicky said, “One of the things I’ve learned in the hospital is that ‘The Golden Rule begins with a verb.’” Establishing productive communication isn’t a wait-and-see who will do it first proposition. Accept the fact that communication is to your organization what blood is to the body; if two-way dialogue isn’t driving progress, then you have a company with no life.
In my visits with Vicky in the cancer unit, I was always touched by the poster she had hanging by her bed. It read, “Be The Change That You Want To See In Others.” If you’re not happy with the way that others communicate with you — then, as Vicky would say, “DO something about it!”
