Don’t Let Distractions Destroy Communication

Not long ago I went shopping for some tools I needed for my work in the garage. The salesperson at a large nationally known retail chain approached me with, “Hi, I’m Matt, is there something I can help you find today?” And that was about the last time he looked me in the eye for the twenty minutes that I was in his department.

 

Matt thought he wanted to assist me, but he really didn’t. He had to answer 3 or 4 texts, two phone calls, and make a bet on a basketball game with a passing co-worker while he was helping me. I wanted to communicate and learn something about a couple of items that interested me. But Matt was distracted and, therefore, our “communication” was virtually non-existent.

 

Effective communication requires at a very minimum the time, attention, and mutual respect of two parties. When that doesn’t happen, nothing meaningful gets accomplished.
